Default What year FXR?

Hi - Thought I would come over from the touring section to gain some knowledge. I have been thinking about adding to the stable, something smaller for fun. I had & wish I had never sold a 1972 FXE & was thinking maybe I could find another one. But I did find a 1982 FXRS that Has caught my eye. I do like shovels alot, but I am now leaning towards an evo. with all that said I was hoping to get opinions on what was the best year for FXR , which model & why. I know that this is a matter of personal taste but I would like some food for thought.

You'd probably get a better response if you posted this in the EVO Section.

I've got a 93 FXR & love it. Try to stay away from the old tappered shaft trannys if you can, splined is just alot less troble. Also the 39mm front end is alot better handling & evos are less maintanice than the old shovels. That's been my side of it anyway. Good luck, FXR's arde the best bike HD ever made for all around fun.

I dont remember off the top of my head but I think if you do some research 91 to 94 are the best years? I think 94 was the last year other than the cvo's around 99.

The only moan I remember was that in 92 Harleys went from Torrington bearings to INLA bearings I think they were which were said to be inferior, although I used to have a 92 FXRS and had no trouble with them.

91 and up had a lot of improvements over the previous years. As kenny pointed out, the transmission was improved and the larger 39mm forks, although introduced before '91, are another improvement. Rear shock mounting postion is different but, that's a debateable point. I believe '91 was also the first year for self cancelling turn signals.

Cam bearings (Torrington to INA) is really a minor issue as they can be replaced a lot easier and cheaper than trns parts or forks.
