Anybody have any tips, tricks or video links. YouTube has plenty of removal videos but none that I can find that shows installation. I've done the install several times but its always a struggle to get past the caliper. I'm usually stuck doing the install by myself so I don't have an extra set of hands.. '07 dyna running Pirelli night dragons. 180/60b/17..
not sure if our rear ends are the same for install, but i have a new tire coming in the next 2 days when it gets here i'll pos t a youtube vid with both the removal and the re-install of the rear wheel probebly this coming wednsday, hopefully someone has chimed in by then but if not i'll post the vid.
I'm looking forward to watching you vid too, NSCoyote.
I just bought a set of tires for my bike and will be removing and
re-installing them this coming weekend.
Not a video but some info from my '03 Service Manual
"1. Roll wheel into rear fork and position brake disc side
spacer between wheel and fork.
2. Slide drive belt over drive sprocket. Make sure brake disc
is centered between brake pads.
3. Coat axle with LOCTITE ANTI-SEIZE LUBRICANT and
install.
a. From right side, carefully insert axle through right
rear fork, rear caliper bracket, right side spacer and
brake disc.
b. Continue sliding axle through wheel hub sleeve,
sprocket, left side spacer and left rear fork.
4. Attach rear shocks.
a. Apply two or three drops of LOCTITE THREADLOCKER
243 (blue) to threads of upper and lower
shock mounting bolts.
b. Lift rear fork and install both shock absorbers with
washers and mounting nuts (1, 2).
c. Tighten all fasteners to 25-40 ft-lbs (33.9-54.2 Nm).
WARNING
Do not exceed 65 ft-lbs (88.1 Nm) when tightening the
axle nut. Exceeding 65 ft-lbs (88.1 Nm) may cause the
wheel bearings to seize during vehicle operation, which
could result in death or serious injury.
5. Install washer (3) and axle nut (2) on
left side of axle.
a. Tighten axle nut to 60-65 ft-lbs (81.3-88.1 Nm).
b. Check to see if the spring clip (2) can be installed. If
required, tighten axle nut to no more than 65 ft-lbs
(88.1 Nm) and align axle hole and nut slots. Install
spring clip.
6. Install debris deflector using three screws. Tighten to 40-
60 in-lbs (4.5-6.8 Nm). "

It should not be a struggle to get past the caliper because the caliper should be out of the way. Pull the caliper off the hanger and pull it forward of the shock completely out of the way. Get the wheel in, start lowering it, sprocket side spacer, belt. Once it's at the proper height, snake the caliper in and onto it's hanger. Make sure the rubber bumper is in good shape and positioned correctly, a little lube on it really helps. Getting it in there can be a bit tricky at first but you'll get the hang of it. Once the caliper is in, install the brake side spacer between caliper and wheel and throw the axle in. Always check wheel alignment and belt tension regardless of wether it was correct before. Sorry I don't have a good video or pics. Fwiw it should take 30-40 min. Including removal, mounting and balancing
Another trick is to put a small wooden wedge in between the brake pads to hold them apart and thus creating some space to slide the caliper over the brake disk...
Always seem to me the caliper part works itself out but the left-side spacer can be tricky.
Helps to have a Bike lift that you can lower just a bit while you hold that spacer in place.
Not a video but some info from my '03 Service Manual
When servicing my boat trailer axles, I was always taught to "preload" the bearings before setting the final torque. Is this something that may be considered here? Maybe not necessary if the bearings aren't repacked?
Thanks for the replies. FXD2003--I do have the service manual for the 07--the only dif I see is your says torque axle to 65 ft/lb----the 07 requires approx 93 ft/lb. Sorry I didn't mention my service manual in original post, would have saved you some typing. Its nice to see these type of replies instead of *go buy a service manual*. I should mention that I have a lift and try to follow service manual instructions. It just seems getting the tire, rim past the caliper and the brake disc between the pads is a real bitch. I just bought low rider mags off eBay and will have tires mounted in a day or two. On a side note ordered a set of pirelli night dragons from rocky mountain ATV---$280 to my front door. Vdop I'll give your method a go. Coyote posting an install vid would be cool. The service manual is great to have but sometimes a well done vid makes it just a little easier to understand. Great wealth of info on this forum. Thanks again.
The new Pirelli's are awesome, recently got a pair on Amazon with free shipping $245 total.
*I've had it with the Metzler's from Brazil, they can't be trusted anymore.
