New rider here. I currently own a Honda Rebel 250 and am very soon looking to upgrade. At first I thought a Sportster Iron 883 because I LOVE the way that bike looks. Especially the ones I've seen online where they put some drag bars and they give it a little tank lift. The thing just looks so bad ***.
Of course as I read more and talk with experienced riders, I now think of going with a Streetbob because of the extra power and the fear of "outgrowing" the sportster.
Now I can only afford 1 bike otherwise I'd get both lol, but I gotta say after looking around the Internet I still can't find that aggressive look that the sportster achieves on any of the Custom Street bobs I see. Anyone have any examples of a Street bob that achieves that aggressive look that an Iron 883 gets. Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough but I can't find one. I'm also a good backyard mechanic but not at all any type of fabricator so any look I achieve would have to be sans any type of welding.
If I can find that one Streetbob that achieves the look then my mind will be settled otherwise I'm forever torn. :P
You didn't say if you're looking for new or used. It's not so easy to find exactly what your vision of a bike is, especially if someone else already modded it to their liking. The great part about the Street Bob is that it's a good blank slate and you can make it exactly how you want it. Look around the forum, check out the garages of Dyna owners, and I'm sure you'll start to get some ideas. We would be more than happy to help you spend your money.

Have you looked at the Fat Bob? If you like the aggressive look of the iron and want a bike you can grow into I would check one out. But of course I'm biased.
You said you like the looks of the sporty with drags. Look up Roland Sands and he has a dyna on there that is badass. I think that might be the direction you are talking about. Get a Street Bob or Super Glide and you have something to work with if that is your direction and definitely bigger than a sporty. Just a thought.

Go to a dealer and ask to ride both. If that's not enough, rent each one for a day (most dealers will discount the purchase price of your rental fees).
I was in the same dilema as you. Ultimately, it came down to a new Sportster versus used Street Bob. I waited it out for two months and a used Bob showed up at my local dealer (an 09, this was over three years ago). I put the money down and have never looked back.
The power, the gas tank, the look and that you won't outgrow it were all the biggest factors. You're right, if I had the money, I'd have both. But believe me, a Dyna is the way to go.
Go for the Dyna. I just got rid of my Iron and moved into a Fat Bob. The new bike is much more comfortable, almost as tossable and has way more power on tap. If you want something like an Iron, a Street Bob is probably where you should be looking to start.
