I was in the same dilema as you. Ultimately, it came down to a new Sportster versus used Street Bob. I waited it out for two months and a used Bob showed up at my local dealer (an 09, this was over three years ago). I put the money down and have never looked back.

The power, the gas tank, the look and that you won't outgrow it were all the biggest factors. You're right, if I had the money, I'd have both. But believe me, a Dyna is the way to go.
the man speaks the truth, sit/ride them both get what makes you feel comfortable

The difference between a Dyna and a Sportster is you sit "in" a Dyna, you sit "on" a sportster. The first factor in any decision is, "Which is the best bike" before "how bad it looks". Obviously I love the Wide Glide, but I am an old school chopper guy. I would be proud to own any Dyna. If I didn't know the style I liked, I think I would start with a SuperGlide and build it to suit me. You are asking the right questions.

It should be illegal to buy a bike without taking one for a good ride. Every one has its own ride qualities and, more importantly, it's own "fit". Can't find out without a ride. I learned that from personal experience.

Assuming that you're going to do the smart thing and ride a couple motorcycles first, if after that you're still undecided, I would say 883 all the way.

You are currently riding a 250cc Honda Rebel (I read that right, didn't I?) Going to an 883cc motorcycle is a great next step. I'm not saying you couldn't handle a larger motor, just that the leap in power and weight would be a little less steep and probably give you more confidence.

Next, for the price of a Dyna, even used, you could pick up an 883 and have a bunch of cash left over to do whatever the hell you want. Paint it, put pipes on it, new seat, shocks, whatever. If you buy a Dyna and it doesn't have all the stuff on it you'd like (they never do), now you have to find more money to make it awesome.

Finally, there's just something kind of badass about the 883. Sounds silly, but, they keep making bigger and faster motorcycles and here you sit, an individual saying, "883 cc's is good enough for this fella." No one will ever question that you're trying to compensate for some other shortcoming.

But, you'll ride a Dyna and just like the rest of us, you'll buy one. They're the Swiss Army Knife of the Harley-Davidson line. They do it all and most of it they do very well.

Either way, yours is an awesome problem to have and count yourself lucky for being stuck in this dilemma.

Best of luck to you!

Ditto to ConeMagnet's post. I rode a Sporty for 9 years, great bike and I miss her from time to time, but the Dyna's the ultimate when it comes to flexibility and what you want to make of her. She can be a Destroyer, a Cruiser, a Chopper, or a Tourer. Remember, the Dyna's a Sporty on steroids!

What kind of "attitude" are you looking for? An iron is just a blacked out sportster. You can make a street bob anything you want.

^^This, definitely. I was in the same exact boat. Was looking into an Iron, went to the dealership but they didn't have any on the floor. Took a 1200 custom for a test ride then saw the bob. I had been looking at Street Bobs online but figured it was a bit out of my price range. Ended up taking it for a ride and an hour later, rode my new street bob home
