I was about 95 miles away from home at the end of my road trip from Houston to NE Alabama and back when my SG started making this awful grinding sound coming from the primary when I cranked up after filling up in Vidor, Texas. I rolled it on the trailer and shut it down and hauled it to my dealer here in Houston. This was last Thursday. The service mgr told me that they were pretty backed up but would be on it early this week (they are closed Sun/Mon). I dropped in on them today to see how it was going and they told me that the starter switch was bad. The mechanic told me that when he turned it on and switched to run, it started cranking without using the start switch and the starter kept running after the engine cranked. The right hand control was all disassembled and he showed me that the switch was intermittent shorting across the contacts with his multimeter. I had told them that it sounded like the starter was hanging so I am not surprised that it was the switch that was bad. They had to order the switch and my ride would be ready by next Tuesday. I told them that since they are also going to open the primary and inspect the primary chain tension for the scheduled oil change/inspection that I wanted them to do a good inspection of the starter drive assembly for any damage as well.
In the meantime, my sweetie keeps giving me these honey-do things and it is driving me nuts! My summer break will be over soon and I got to be back on campus on the 20th and I need to get my head cleared before then. I jokingly told them if it took longer than that they needed to give me a weekend loaner because I was having serious withdrawal and would become a daily fixture in their service lobby...The service mgr said that they probably could do that...
