Even tho, its ultimately your choice, just holding up those apes to your bike made it look killer. But some here have hit the nail on the head. Maybe try going somewhere in the middle, not too high for wind drags sake, but not hunched over. There are a ton of sick mini ape Z bar style bars out there you could consider.

True! Maybe if I sell the apes locally I'll take a look around. I like LA Choppers ape hangers, they are a little narrower but still tall as they need to be.
I say go with apes
1. I have a set and feel good riding with them, they dont kill my back.
2. They look killer when held up on by your bike.
3. Feels comfortable to you
I love my apes. That being said, I love the look of the Z's on your bike. Maybe a compromise of narrower apes? I don't know...but I did vote for apes since they seem to give you less trouble.
Narrower apes would be nice [LA Choppers has badass apes starting @ $358 on eBay], but I think I'll just put back my old ones, mainly because they're immediately available. (I live overseas, so I have to wait at least 3-4 weeks for delivery)
As for the "there's no escapin' once you go ape-in" comment, lol. I think I'll save that one.
