I wrote a piece on bike camping for the biker blog I started. The piece includes a link to my Pinterest page that has a ton of motorcycle camping gear I use. I have refunded our set up multi times over the last four years and now is decked out for luxury bike camping but my Pinterest board has info on when I was solo bike camping too. One piece of gear I have fallen in love with is the REI flex lite chair weighs less than 2 pounds and is the size of a wine bottle. But it you are interested in bike camping check out the blog and the link to the list of products. The biggest advice I have is buy the best tent and sleeping bag/ pad you can. Nothing is worse than discovering what a bargain a tent is during a storm. http://bikerqueenvixen.blogspot.com/...o-is-camp.html

For east coast treks I carry a Hennessy hammock. Two trees (or post) and I am dry and comfortable. It fits in one saddlebag with room to spare. My trips out westerly didn't fare as well with it as I had to tie off between trucks to stay off the ground.

If I had a reliable wingman, I could have a "la mansion" with attached garage like lizdc but I would probably need a compass and map to find my way out! <just kidding>

LOL it is big ;-) and in theory sleeps 8 so is overkill but man we are comfortable ;-) when it was just me camping off the bike I used a basic camp dome 2 from REI and was able to fit everything in a medium sized REI duffel that went on my backseat. And for sturgis we took an REI half dome 4. Both great tents but you can't stand in them so more than a few days of crawling in and out of a tent is a pain in the a$$ I also own the hobitat 4 from REI that you can stand in ( I camp at the beach for a week every summer with my kido

Lot of good info here for sure. I also have lighweight backpacking gear but I haven't done any motorcycle camping yet. Hope to next season. Look for roll-up inflatable matresses for sleeping. Thermarest, etc. as suggested I think mine are Big Agnes. Wonderful things. I would also suggest buying the footprint for any tent you buy depending on what type of location you are going to be camping in. We have small micro-fiber towels that we carry for drying off after showering. They have rubber loops and carabiners so you can hang them up and they dry really quick.

I would stick or at least look into military gear. If it's good enough for the boys on the front lines it's good enough for me. If you're alone and in a wooded area go for one of these.

I have cheap Coleman 2-man dome tent, an Ozark 32* down bag and a cheap self-inflating mattress that I roll all together with an extra tarp into a 7x24 inch package that weighs little and straps on to my rack or anywhere you have room. I have a nice little GSI dualist mess kit and whisper lite stove that packs inside the mess kit. I've used this set-up all over the southeast for the past two years. It isn't a cold weather set up but I'm not likely to ride or camp in sub zero weather.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. Dyna wide glide with saddlebags and a tail bag. My wife and I used to backpack, so have much of the stuff already. We are going to try camping this year.
Thanks for the info, Lizdc, great stuff. You and I are real lucky with the 3 REI stores in the area. Hurts my wallet every time I am near one!
