They're painted black. .so have to be extra careful during tire changes not to scuff up the edges, and the "Harley Davidson" script is etched revealing bare aluminum so you have to put a sealant or wax over it or it'll corrode. There goes my desire to get these for my bike. Really Harley, couldn't put a coat of clear over it?

Unless you do them yourself and wrap your tools in something. .you know the shop isn't going to be that careful, although I guess if you're paying them you can get a new set of wheels each time when they screw up. Maybe that's a plus?
FYI I have run powder coated wheels for nearly 10 years and never had a problem. Always have them mounted at the kind of shops that mount tires for a $20 bill on Saturday mornings too. Half that time I had a Buell and I went through a lot of tires

i had the white buell rims and they never got scratched , when i did my own tires i just wrap a piece of garden hose that has been split around rim , its not a big deal
I just changed my tire myself for the first time. I bought these and never put a mark on the rim. It helped to have a friend come by for a second set of hands.
Any wheel is easy to damage regardless of finish if you have an inexperienced tech changing your tires. The finish is pretty much irrelevant although I am pretty certain the wheels are powder coated which is more durable than regular paint.
