My first oil change
No need to tighten the filters that much, but the factory always does anyway. Spin on the new filter and once the gasket touches the housing all you need is a half to three quarters turn and your good to go. As the donthere says two and a half quarts when changing the oil or you will have oil going into you ac from the breather bolts. Mobil 1 20/50 syn from Walmart a good choice.
If you are going to change brands of oil filters on your bike, you will need to make sure the one you switch to filters as well as the Harley filter, ie same micron level. I use a strap wrench to get my oil filters off and it has never failed to work.

Never use a wrench to tighten the filter...always by hand.
Poking 2 holes in the end of the filter, one at 12 and one at 6 o'clock and letting it drain will stop the mess. I drain mine overnight and never have any residual oil in the filter to spill.

dont mess with HD's pathetic little filter funnel you can do the same thing by cutting down a 2 liter plastic soda bottle. I use a cut down piece of flexible cutting board (Dollar store) to make a trough
Thanks folks for all the helpful hints. I use to change the oil on my 02
Sporty but it was a little different than my new to me Super Glide.
And I did know about the 2 and a half quarts. Would like to get a hold
of the guy that put on that oil filter.
