How do I change it with out getting oil on everything below it? Just did my 1000 mi oil change and couldn't catch the oil from the filter. I tried aluminum foil when I did the 500 mi check up. It was better but I still didn't catch it all.
I have a battery operated drill with a small bit and just drill a small hole in the back of the filter and one on the top. It drains 3/4 of the oil out. Then I just use some simple green to clean it off and rinse with warm water. You can use spray brakekleen to get it off as well.
I use a 1/2 gallon milk jug that I cut the bottom out and then cut up the side. That way you can slip it under the filter and the oil drains in the jug.
I cut a 1 qt plastic water bottle at the bottom leave the cap screwed on it and use it as a sleeve to go up over the filter. The hole sounds okay, but the bottle thing works and I just have a little oil to clean.
I just spray a bunch of brake cleaner and hose off the engine with it and clean off the motor mount and wipe it down as good as i can. It might drip off the motor mount for a day or so but it goes away.
i cut 1/4 out of a 2 liter bottle... i slide that around the filter, then take off the filter... the oil runs down the bottle into my catch can... no mess no fuss
Easier & cheaper than foil. Get it between the filter and everything else, remove filter, clean the mount, replace catch-can with some old newspapers, and then slide the plastic-wrap onto the newspaper.
Of course, don't get plastic on hot pipes & fins. Never a problem for me; I change oil cold with the belief that most dirty oil has settled down near the drainplug, rather than clinging to walls and such.
The one time I've changed my oil so far, yeah, I go oil absolutely everywhere. I read someone saying to put a bread bag over the filter and then turn; I thought that was a pretty good idea. Gonna try that next time.
