Default Torque Cones?

I replaced the Fat Bob style 2 into 1 exhaust system on my Super Glide because I just could not get rid of the blow back and popping and they were starting to look a little ratty. I put on some Samson Wildcats that I got a steal of a deal on and while they definitely look cleaner and sound great, along with no more blow back and popping, I immediately noticed a significant decrease with the low and mid range torque. I was wondering if installing torque cones would give me back some of the torque that I lost with the Samson pipes?

Also, I see them on eBay for less than $20 and Samson cones go for over $80 with shipping. Is this one of those things that I need to go with the Samson cones because of the Samson exhaust pipes or will the cheaper ones give me pretty much the same results?

Any properly sized torque cones should work. Samson may have design the length and shape for best performance that you might not get from a generic. Unless you have a super tuned performance motor, there is likely little difference. They are usually designed to work in the absence of baffles not with. My bike runs better with cones than 4 inch baffles.

How can I determine the proper size cones?

I installed straight through baffles in the pipes. I put the blocked baffles in first but it wasn't the sound I was looking for. The straight through baffles sound good.

I still have the other pipes. The pipes themselves are still good but the heat shields and muffler look like crap. I was thinking about just wrapping the pipes and replacing the muffler, and trying to re-jet the carb to tweak out the blow-back and decel popping. However, I do not have a clue what slip-on will work with those pipes. I am new at this but from what I can tell, the pipes look exactly like HD Fat Bob pipes I see in photos.

Forget torque cones for a road bikes. They do nothing.

If the exhaust you have is too open and you are losing low-end performance then some sort of baffles is your answer. If you can't get past not being able to frighten small children when you pass them then look at a lollipop solution like Big City Thunder baffles.

I had them in my old softail with ground pounders (Sampson)... at the advise of the HD mechanic and they sure seemed to help a little, and with these bikes it's often a bunch of little tweaks, I'd consider them in your case.

DKCustoms Thunder Torque Inserts is the answer.

I tried the most restrictive baffles first but the sound was not what I was trying for so I put in the open baffles...The low-mid torque was the same with either style of baffles.

What I am trying to find out is whether or not cones would give me back some of the performance I lost when I changed exhaust systems from the 2 into 1 to the separate pipes, and if there was enough of a difference between the expensive Samsons and cheap Mid USA cones to justify paying more.

I have seen dyno results that would prove you wrong...more than once!! They work well with drag pipes.

Check out NRHS's testing: http://www.nrhsperformance.com/tech_arcones.shtml

You have to have a pretty crummy exhaust that torque cones are the answer. Drap pipes and torque cones are an historic fix for bikes that are running consistently at just one high RPM e.g. drag racing. If you have some pipes on a street bike that gain from having torque cones then you have a bunch of problems that two rings of steel aren't the magic bullet fix to.

Basically, torque cones are going to turn a crap exhaust into a less well flowing crap exhaust.

hi,

can only tell you I have smartpartz hardcore baffle in the V & H straight shots on the fxdwg (normal baffle),

they were put in to quiet a little and to me the bike goes pretty well with them and then barks when you hit the throttle

i should add they go in the end of the pipe to supplement the current baffle

thanks
