Default Warranty question / first service

So, the dealer closest to me is extremely high on first service rates. The dealer I bought the bike at is not too bad at $270 for a dyna but it's an hour ride and I work till 4/they close at 6 and with the weather turning I'd prefer not to have to ride that far and risk running secondary roads late in the evening with deer season approaching.... The first service is getting done regardless of if I hit 1K miles before storage for the winter, of course. However, there is a pretty good independent shop not too far from me that I'm considering calling to see how much he'd charge for the first service or if he'd even do it. Question is if I will have issues should I need warranty work done if I don't get the first service done at a dealer. I'll keep the documentation for the work, obviously. Any input is appreciated...

My understanding is that where you get your service done has no effect on the warranty as long as you can document that the work was done. If you do it yourself you need to keep receipts for the parts. If you don't like to do the work yourself, you'll save a shitload of money if you have a qualified independent close by.

I would eventually like to do my own work but I don't have all the necessary tools yet and the house we currently rent has a tiny garage. Ideally, we'll maybe buy a house with a good 2 car garage. I just wanted to get some verification that I wouldn't be taking a risk if I didn't get the work done at a HD dealership. As long as the mechanic is qualified HD should stand behind their warranty.

Just keep receipts and document everything. Print out the check list from the service manual and have your guy sign it.

This. My dad gets his bike serviced at an independent place and hasn't had any warranty issues yet.

Not rocket science to do it yourself.
get the HD service manual and just do it.
I have never been in for service, keep receipts .
My extended service plan is about to expire and they have never seen me since I drove off.
It's enjoyment to work on your bike.

I had the same concern, dealer told me I had to have them do the work (after market performance parts) and the 1k service. Well they installed the pipes, AC & re-mapped it. They didnt do a horrible job, but to me it should have been perfect.... and wasnt.

Asked around on this board & Long story short, Ill be doing all of my own work from here out and will just document (receipts, date, milage etc).

Thanks to all those who have helped clear that up!

Doing my own service work is very satisfying to me as I know the person doing the work and I know how meticulous he is about doing it right.
