Ok so I've read thread after thread about tuners and all it has done is confuse me. I have a 2013 street bob with freedom performance amendment exhaust. I wanted something different from the norm which I believe I got however I am at a stand still on what to do next. I have a stock air cleaner which I have HEARD is just as good as a K&N filter however I have also heard that you need to upgrade your air filter in order to cool down your engine after adding aftermarket exhaust. I have heard that adding a tuner such as power commander will help substantially with the air fuel ratio however the dealer has stated that the power commander will "ignor signals that there is something wrong with the engine" and of course they recommended the screamin eagle super tuner how ever I don't want to change (edit)(rather substitute with after market tuner) the original computer (for warranty purposes if even possible) I'm also a little nervous about letting some local shop tune it, I unfortunately have heard negative reviews about the local. I Would like the dealership to make the adjustments but just don't want to wait for the warranty to be up if you can understand that. I also can't find any maps for a fxdb with the freedom performance amendments. Just don't know what to do from here. Any help and advise would greatly be appreciated!
you will soon learn your dealer will likely screw you whenever possible, no matter what tuner, SE cam, etc...you put in that bike even if a local indy shop installs it, a good dealer will honor your warranty. if PCVs, PVs, tts, etc... products harmed any motor they wouldnt be on the majority of bikes, the race tuner is also a good choice
ypur stock a/c does not flow as good as aftermarket products. seems to me local shops tune better than dealers, your dealer might be different.
but keep in mind most HD techs are parts changers not motor builders
As stated, an aftermarket a/c will flow much better than a stock filter and u will notice a difference. As far as tuners, I had a fuel moto micro tuner on my 13 sb, and it worked great. With the software it even lets u fine tune the individual cylinders fuel management. That being said, FM's maps are really spot on. Could u possibly pull a little more performance with a professional dyno tune...possibly, but would u even be able to tell a difference, probably not. End of the day, bang for the buck and adjustability on the micro is pretty high in my opinion. Add to that the great service u get from FM and it makes it almost a no brainer if you are stopping with stage 1. As far as not finding a tune for your specific pipes/breather, just find a tune for equipment that most closely matches your equipment. There isn't that much difference between types of brands as long as they are similar in style. And again, if you get ur stuff from FM they will pre load the correct map for your setup and help you use the software to fine tune it if need be.
DynoJet's Powervision is now set up for 2014s. It will allow you to re-tune if you add more upgrades, later.
Cobra's tuner adjusts the tune in real time, so changes will be automatically accounted for. The Cobra must be installed on the bike and stay on the bike. It doesn't give a display or the ability to personalize the tune.
Do some more homework before deciding which tuner is best for you.
For whatever reasons, if you decide you want somebody besides yourself to tune your bike, locate a local indie shop with a good rep for tuning and find out what system they prefer. That's the one you want, regardless what you hear or believe from others.
I have the PC V installed. It was done by an indy shop. I asked around and went in and talked with different shops in the area, to include the local HD dealer. That little effort solidified my decision to go with the indy shop where I purchased and had install my PC V. It was because they were direct, straight forward and explained that if I even thought about adding any upgrades to my engine...I should hold off on dyno testing. That it would be financially retarded to have it dyno'ed twice....
Get a tuner, best upgrade to have. It should've been my first....
Hit the streets, find every indy/dealer shop and talk to them.
So I decided to go with the Ness Big Sucker Stage I air cleaner ($179 from HD dealer) and the Power Commander V from Fuel Moto ($289) both ordered today to go with the freedom performance amendment exhaust. Decided on the PCV however I might end up switching to the power vision, just don't like the idea that it is married to the bike and also because of the fact that it actually changes the bike's ecu itself even if you can flash it back to stock. I do like the idea that you can see real time statistics of the bike on the powervision if I understood correctly. I liked the slimmed down looks of the big sucker air cleaner over the huge stock round chrome air cleaner. Still not sure about the dyno yet. The dealership said they wanted around a grand to do it. They said it would take 5 hours of labor which sounds a little much.. Will wait and see how well the map works out. And thanks for the input. I'll post another update when parts arrive...
