I haven't purchased the service manual yet for this bike. I'd like to know how to remove the starter. Can anyone share that section of the service manual, or guide me with a tutorial? I hope this isn't too hard a project.
yep pull the primary cover, bend down the stay tab on the bolt, remove the bolt at the end of the starter, and then the gear, from there use some extended ball end allens to get to the allen bolts on the other side, undo the wires, and pull it out
Ugh, thanks guys. Was hoping it wasn't this much work. I dropped an exhaust nut, and I didn't see where it went. It didn't make it to the floor though. It had to have gone behind the primary, or under the starter. Tried compressed air, magnet, shaking and bouncing the bike-no help. I'd hate to not be able to find it, thought maybe getting under the starter would be a simpler job. Not sure if its worth it or not. Any advice?
Yeah, got another nut already. Was going to get it on the lift tonight, give it one more look. I even have a bore scope, and couldn't see it. I don't think it can get into anything to cause trouble should it?
Just install the new nut and don't worry about it. It won't be able to get inside the motor and will most likely fall off while riding. Put some anti sieze on the new nut and torque it to specs while the motor is cold.
Thanks guys. Actually was swapping pipes, and the nut on the rear cylinder got a little wedged between the stud and the heat shield, then it broke free when not expected. Man looked a little more tonight, and really cant tell where that could have gone. Can actually see under the started a bit, and running the magnet should pick it up. I really cant see where it could have gotten stuck behind the primary. Also cant see where it could have gotten stuck next to the cylinder either. My garage floor is very clean, so I am positive that it didn't make it to the floor. Oh well, I will give it once last look on the lift, then put it all back together.
