I've got a '93 FXDL with an unresponsive speedo. The cable is good and the lower drive is good. I removed the driven gear unit from the back of the speedo and attached a drill, the speedo worked fine. It has to be the two plastic gears in the 90deg drive gear on the speedo (upper cable end). I can not find these gears or this driven gear unit anywhere. I found a Russian micro phiche which didn't show it either. Any help?!? Thanks.
To my best knowledge, the 90 degrees gear drive mounted to the back of this speedo (see images)is not available as a separate spare part.
You could try to find another speedo at Ebay or at a salvage company like http://www.pinwallcycle.com
I have the speedo part number. It seems to me that since the driven gear is so easily removed and the gears are plastic, this would be a serviceable part.
The frustrating thing is the gears look good, they're just not hooking up good.
Okay, the driven gear on the back of the speedo contains one gear. The other is on the input shaft of the speedo. The gear in the 90deg on the back is pressed onto a splined shaft. It appears the plastic gear is slipping on the splined shaft. I have cross drilled the shaft, cleaned the inside of the gear and applied some JB Weld through the drilled holes, over the splines and inside the gear. This should repair the slippage for anyone in the future with a similar issue.
