Been reading around about this and I guess I still have some questions. Back in May I bought my first bike, a 2002 FXDL. I thoroughly enjoyed riding all summer, but wanted to put some apes on. Now that winter is here, I am looking to begin getting the parts and getting to work.
I am pretty set on the Burly Brand 16" narrow apes. I was sitting on the bike today, and I looked closer at the risers and noticed that they look to be pullback type. I am unsure of the height and amount of pullback, as I didn't install.
My question is is it OK to run apes on these? I've seen lots of opinion that it does not look great, but also seen some photos where it didn't look too bad. I'm mostly wondering if there is any reason why it could be a problem, in terms of steering or handling? What would anyone here recommend for a riser height, if i were to change then out to straight ones? I am abut 6'4" to 6'5" or so in height if that matters.
Aside from the risers, I gathered from a few posts I've read on here to use 39.5" throttle and idle cables and a 74" clutch cable, NAMZ harness extension (15"). If anyone sees error in this, please tell me. I haven't ordered any parts yet, so the more I can learn from you all, the more $$ it will save me in wrong parts.
Thanks for any help anybody can provide in advance.
Burly and LA choppers sell whole cable kits for ape hangers. Pricey but worth every buck.
Can you run apes on pullback risers? Sure you can! Some people don't like the look, but that is up to you. Personally I don't mind.
Steering and handling won't be affected (again, that depends from rider to rider), but you might experience some flex when pushing the handlebars, but that can be greatly reduced with better bushings (polyurethane, brass, your choice depending on your budget)
I like ape hangers, I had 19 inch apes and they were awesome (though probably a bit too much for my '05 Super Glide) I'm planning to go back to apes as soon as I land some extra cash. You won't regret it! You're a tall dude too, so I'm pretty sure you'll make the most out of them. Keep us posted with progress pictures!
I had considered the Burly cable kit, but I wanted braided stainless, and their kit looks to be black. Thanks for your input, looking for as much as I can get from people on here.
Parts have been ordered, and should all be here by beginning of next week. Went with the 16" Burly Narrow Bottom Apes, Kuryakyn ISO grips, new DS straight risers, DS braided stainless throttle cables, clutch cable, and brake line, NAMZ harness extensions. Was going to get the chrome switch housings, but will for now run the black and see if I want the chrome later.
Looking forward to parts getting here and getting started on this.
Apes arrived today , can't wait to get them on. My harness extensions should arrive on Thursday, and the remainder of the parts on Monday. Probably get started next weekend on this project.
