For some reason, I view the dangers of riding in a car differently than I do the dangers of riding around unprotected on a bike.
Maybe it's me...
Trying not to sound like a smartass.
Just an FYI: In 2009 the latest I found full details for, 24,400 people were killed in cars, 4,400 were killed on motorcycles.
Prelim details show the numbers of deaths rising through 2012.
All this proves is being on the road is dangerous no matter what type of vehicle you are in or on.
Until this last year, the only riding was alone. Picked up this 13 Ultra and am trying to get use to having someone else on. Stopping, turning that sort of thing. This is her first time on a bike. She really likes it. She can't ride a bicycle for squat. So her own bike is out. Phew!!!Not married long. But I try to learn away from traffic if I can swing it. The intercom is great, except for the first time. Then you think the voices have started again. I do wish that when people applied for a driver's license, they spend some time on a bike first. Then put their butts in a car. It's great to have someone to share something that is so much fun. There is danger in everything we do. But hiding in the house from it all is a very slow death.
I know its dangerous and so does my wife. She also has her own, but longer distance she likes it on back with me. I have learned to deal with it. Don't let it haunt ya.
OP, I can understand your view, however I value my life just as much as I do anyone who rides with me. I agree, we are carrying some very precious cargo when someone hops on the back but I am not going to deprive myself or the person on the back the enjoyment we all share. Being on a bike is special, me and my babe enjoy sharing it together. Whenever she thinks I'm doing something stupid or dangerous, I remind her of the fact that I do NOT want to crash just as much as her. Fortunately, she just sits still and leaves the driving to me. At the end of the day, we take a lot if risks in life. Getting out on the bike is one I'm willing to take, and I'm happy she is willing to share it with me!
I refuse to live life being scared wondering about the what if... wife rides with me and enjoys it, we take reasonable precautions, not going to be one of those riders with the safety vests, FF helmet on a 100 deg day riding like you have a stick up your ***... life is too short as it is....
As others have suggested it comes across as a bit over conservative of a decision considering how risky life is when doing normal daily stuff. In the end it's your decision and that's all there is to it.
I'm not all that conservative when it comes to riding motorcycles...
-I live in Pennsylvania and ride with no helmet 90% of the time.
-I wear a novelty helmet when I go into New Jersey to work.
-I've ridden in shorts and sneakers plenty of times.
I ride so clearly I'm a bit of a risk taker. I just won't ride someone else on the back of my mororcycle.
If someone's dying, I don't want to be the blame... lol.
I'd rather go 2up than have my wife ride her own. She likes to ride more by herself. I mitigate her lack of experience by going on less busy roads, but rarely ride in traffic 2up, either.
