I need a windshield - 10' Wide Glide - Input please!
Hey guys,
I need a windshield for my 10' Wide Glide, unfortunately. I rode today against a moderately/heavy headwind today, and it was VERY miserable. My whole body was in pain. So that basically just solidified my decision in getting a windshield.
With that being said, I have a $300 credit for Harley that I need to use and I'll be putting that toward a windshield. The last windshield I had was on a Fat Boy and while the windshield definitely cut down on fatigue, the buffeting was VERY annoying.
Anyway, I want a windshield that I can look through and have as little buffeting as possible. I'm 5'8" just so you all know. What are your thoughts on these two.
My two options/choices are:
Harleys Quick-Release Super Sport Windshield-57301-06 - measures 19" above headlight
for size the rule of thumb i've always heard is measure the vertical distance from your eyes to the top of the headlamp ( helps if you have someone else do it) . then subtract a couple inches and thats the height you want your shield to be for a full sized shield.
you want to be looking just over the top of the screen not through it. if your doing trial and error i'd start with the shorter screen.
flyscreen/deflectors you kinda need to trial and error.
I installed a windshield to combat the wind buffeting and it helped quite a bit, but it was still annoying. I went with the Memphis Shades batwing fairing with the attached windeflectors and lowers and now the wind buffeting is all but gone.
I have the detach 19" sport model - came on the bike when I bought it. I'm not a huge fan with the look of windshields on anything other than a touring bike, but it does help on days like today when it is 40 degrees. With a full face helmet there is a little bit of buffeting, but it is tolerable - granted I'm 6'2 so it may be a different experience for you. I'll see if I can get some pictures uploaded later today.
I have the HD quick detach Super Sport 19" windshield on my FXDC. IMO it looks better than the compact windshield. I've had both & the SS has much less buffeting.
I'm very happy with it. I was going to get something else for looks, but I really just like my SS screen. It doesn't have the cross braces like the other windshields, which makes it look a lot better.
Regardless of what you're thinking, you don't want to look through it you want to look over it....it will still deflect the wind over your head.
They also make the SS windshield in a 16" version, although I've never tried one.
As for a good combination of good protection, and looking descent on the bike at the same time, I recommend the HD Super Sport 19".
Here are a couple pics of it on my bike, plus my sig pic.

I've got the compact quick release on my Street Bob and it works great. I'm 6'1" and experience a little helmet buffeting at highway speeds. What's nice about the quick release shield is that you can move them a little along the fork tubes to dial in the wind protection.
Personally i would go with the compact shield since it looks a little wider than the sport. I bought my bike used and it came with the quick release shield. I thought it was the most hideous thing in the world. I put it on for a long ride and haven't taken it off since. The look has grown on me and the ride is so much more enjoyable. I plan on getting the hardware powder coated black to blend in better.
+1 to the comments about wanting to look over it. I got caught in the rain with the windshield higher than I would have liked it to be and I felt like I was riding blind. I actually stopped to put it lower so i could look over it easily.
