general dyna questions
What year is the Lowrider you're looking at? If you just want a short haul cruiser, the EVO FXDWG sounds OK, although I couldn't get excited about such an old, albeit proven, design. Were I shopping used I'd look for an 08; new EFI, 6 speed and 96 inch motor. The 06 is a year I'd not bother with because of the mix of old and new in the engine...

If your looking for a great, lightweight Harley with a 96 TC with 6 speed for not alot of cash, look for a base 2007 Super Glide (FXD). Great starting point, engine and trans are solid, modern Delphi fuel injection, non CAN-bus control system so everything electrical is simple. They have the 49mm forks too so a set of ricor intiminators and your choice of rear shocks and a tru track should make that FXD handle like its on rails! 96 twin cam is plenty powerful with a fuel pack and there are a ton of great exhaust choices if the bike doesnt already have a stage one installed.
Once you go on a Dyna, its hard to ride any other Harley unless you NEED the touring features. I personally rented a Road Glide custom while my Fat Bob was in for tire replacement and after a day I couldn't wait to get back on my Dyna.

I figured as much. They have power, the shorter wheelbase makes them fun and easier to ride, and they are not real heavy. That suits my needs the most right now.

I have a few bikes, but by far my favorite to ride is my 2009 Street Bob. Carbs rule in my heart ... but being able to jump on, flip a switch, and take off is pretty sweet. Six speeds in the tranny is nice too. I bought my 2009 last year for $8K. Deals are out there if you have the patience to look and are willing/able to fix a few possible defects.
Ron, it could be that I'm just in a good location for used bikes. On 2 Jan (Pensacola's Craigslist) there was a 2009 Dyna Super Glide with just 8,800 miles for sale in Pace Fl (across the bay from Pensacola) for $8,200. And just a couple of days earlier there was a 2008 Super Glide for $6,500. If I didn't already have too many bikes, I would have been on that one. Maybe you can get your son in Destin to start checking the local listings.

i dunno a quick run through craigslist shows a couple of 2007+ streetbobs and a superglide in the 8-9k range in the greater dfw area..
Slozomby, I found an 05 dyna with only 6100 miles for $6500. I owe IRS back taxes, lots of them, so after the april 15th blood letting, maybe then i can jump on something.
Tony, that is a good idea about destin.I go there every summer, if i don't have a bike by april or may, that would be a good reason to go out there with my wife, my f 150, and a ramp and tiedowns.

Yeah the cam chain tensioners on early TC88s were and issue, but you can pick anything apart. My 2002 Dyna has a stronger crank than newer Dynas and I can change out the tensioners to the newer style for not a lot of money.
The perfect Harley isn't out there; buy the one you like and live with the shortcomings and only chase/fix what you have to. You'll have a lot of fun that way.
