I loved my WG, the forward controls and apes I was able to just stretch out and cruise. But the touring bikes with highway pegs works quite well and is what I prefer now. It depends on what type of riding you do and what you like. Ride a bunch of different ones until you find one that is comfortable to you.

My FXDC with forward controls is MUCH more roomier than both the Electra Glides and the Road King that I've owned! I can stretch out way more on the Dyna than any bagger I've ever ridden. I'm 6', 235 lbs.

Thanks for the informative replies, guys.

The verdict in favor of dynas from people who own, or used to own, softails is hard to argue with.

But can a dyna -- I'm thinking Street Bob or Super Glide here -- be comfortable on a long ride? I.e., can you tour on a dyna without getting a sore butt or chiropractic problems?

Yeah, I could try to figure it out meself through test riding, but I'd appreciate your advice because: 1) I'm not sure it's feasible to sort out comfort issues through short test rides and 2) I don't have a MC license yet and won't get one till after I retire a few months from now.
Get your MC endorsement and then rent some some bikes. That would be my advise.

I'm 6'4" 260 pounds and fit on my street bob with forward controls better then anything else in the harley line up, however I could never recommend it for touring duty.

I have forwards on my 2006 FXDi35 Superglide and love the stretch the forwards provide.

Over Labor Day weekend, several friends and I (they were on Softtails and baggers) did a 1300 mile ride to the Mexican border and back. With my Mustang Wide Tripper Solo I was comfortable the entire trip.

Set your bike up to fit you and you can tour on whatever you like (Dyna included).

Well my ultra classic i had was sweet for touring. But i done 500 mile rides in one day on my dyna as well with no problems. It depends alot on your seat and shocks. Being i do lot of mountain riding driving kinda wild i like my bike stiff. But for long rides i just loosen her up some is all. I go so use to the dyna i sold the ultra.

any dyna is plenty capable of doing long tours. you may need to spend on comfort features to get it good for you.

with my fat bob as an example. i like mids but i threw some highway pegs on for long trips. i upgraded the seat. the stock seat was fine for 90 minutes or so at a time. the new seat lets me go till i run out of gas. a sissy bar and luggage rack for bungeeing stuff to.
and i bought a fairing for cold days/long trips.

while i havent done anything longer than a 500 mile day since getting the last parts bolted on. i had no problems the next day.

sure a touring bike is a better tourer right off the factory floor. but a dyna is more than capable of being one when set up for the rider. and i like the dyna much better for the other 90% of my riding.

Dynas and touring as from my research:

100% capable as a tourer. Get yourself the Sundowner or Dyna Touring seat and you'll have no want for a comfier seat unless you get a customized seat.

Dynas can be equipped with the rear Touring shock setups. If you didnt know, the touring line switched to the 49mm front forks, something the Dynas have had since 2006. add a tru-track stabilizer and shes comfortable and on rails in cornering.

Hard bags can be added if you desire, either Dyna specific bags, cyclevision baggertail convertions, or bags by Tsukayu should all be more than adequate!

A road king is definitely a nice ride for sure, but ultimately it comes down to how much you want to spend, how heavy of a bike do you want, REALISTICALLY what kind of riding will you be doing etc.

I own a Fat bob and rented a Road Glide. Was supposed to be for two days, I took the Glide back after one because my Dyna felt sooo much better to ride!

6'7" here and the dyna is the roomiest

Followed by the road king (fairings make other tourers "feel" smaller).

I have to say that the breakout ain't too bad............for a soft tail
