I've ridden softails with stock forward controls for 23 years before going to mids on my Dyna. I much prefer the forwards but I won't change mine over. Have forward highway pegs of course.

I rented an SG once that had mids and after 4 days knew for a fact I hated them. I felt like I was sitting on a crapper. Just me.

my learning curve was the way to move my feet of the ground rolling off a stop sign. i had to get used to moving my feet up and forward as opposed to up and on mid controls. Riding around is nice, but real slow speed turns in a parking lot or u-turns on a street are trickier with forward controls

I rode with the mids waiting for my forwards to come in. My legs would cramp up in less than 1 hour (I'm 6'). It took one ride to get used to the forwards.
When I was taking my safety class I rode a bike with mids, then it was weird going from one bike to another. Other than that it was smooth sailing.
You will get used to it really quick, no worries.

I just put forwards on my fxdc, I find my lower back gets sore. If that continues I'll go back to mids.

At 60 years old, the body will no longer bend up to accept mid controls. So, forwards are required and quite frankly, the only way I have ridden for the last 25 years. One thing to watch on a Dyna. If you have short legs, the air cleaner causes you to ride bow legged to reach the controls. I got around that by installing a Screaming Eagle heavy breather. Now, my legs fit right under the intake pipe and it is like riding my barcolounger down the highway.

Being 6'3" there was no learning curve. Mids were not comfortable with a 34" inseam. Forwards are night and day to me. I'm much more confortable and have a better feel of the bike with forwards.

I found the mids cramped, coming from sport bikes I don't want my knees bent up. Got kuryakyn 9063 forwards with stirrups. Very comfortable. The heal rests if adjusted right feel like floor boards just up front. Also the kuryakyn are pretty wide my leg doesn't hit the air cleaner

This was a concern of mine.....one of the reasons why I have a Mustang with back rest waiting to be put on.

And....from the looks of things, it appears that the mid pegs could be left in place for a short term change of pace now and again on the open road.
And if it turns out those mids will never be used.....4 bolts and they are gone.

What is your bike? On my low rider I could have left the mid pegs but the brake pedal would have to be removed. Not sure if the peg gets in the way of the new brake rod. Have you considered getting some highway pegs cheap and riding around for awhile?
