Amsoil probably has a little bit more 'esthers' in it (Group V oil) but that's no all that important AFAIC.
But if you like Amsoil and you don't mind paying a little more and being a little harder to get hold of, it's also as good as it gets.
When I first switched to M1, I too noticed a change in the sound of the Motor.
Know why? I was listening for it.
You keep on using whatever and within a short period of time you aren't going to hear anything.
All the Synthetics are pretty good. Even the Group III Harley Oil is pretty decent.
The dino oil is good, too. But if you get that oil HOT, the VI's (Viscosity index improvers...... needed for multi grade oil) will break down and you'll be left with a base stock oil with a viscosity of baby oil.
Not good for a motor.
But that doesn't happen very often. You have to get it pretty hot or go for quite a while without changing it.
One other thing.....
If people could travel back in time and ride their bikes when they were new.... 10, 15 years ago, they'd be AMAZED at how much power they've lost over the years.
I am convinced that running good oil and taking good care of your motor can slow this from happening to an almost dead stop.
Oil makes a difference. It really does.... Especially over a period of time.

Mobil V Twin here is $10.99/qt, Amsoil is $10.87/qt, so I am going with the cheaper priced oil....and both are available at the store in town.
Heard all this so many times it ain't funny anymore. Bet anyone on here $1000 I put Syn3, HD Dyno, Mobile 1, Amsoil or any other motor oil of choice so long as it's the correct viscosity range, you don't know what order, then listen to and ride the bike and tell me what I put in. You guess right three out of five times or better I pay you. You guess wrong, you pay me.
I used nothing but HD synthetic oil, since I bought the bike... shifting was noisey and clunky.. motor was loud and rough.. Amsoil put an end to all that. I used some new Castrol V twin oil this time around and it seems to be working as good as the Amsoil. Whatever works best for you... I have always had to add oil between oil change times, no matter what oils I use.
My story since I bought my Bob in 2010. I started out with regular HD dino, bike ran hotter than I liked so tried HD syn and Formula 1 in the primary. Didn't improve much. Went to Royal Purple, my IPB went out so being the superstitious fool I am, the Purple was gone. Put Mobil 1, along with Mobil products in the tranny and primary. I did notice a nice difference. Then a friend of mine had some Amsoil (motor oil, severe gear) left after he got rid of his scoot so I tried it, along with Rotella 15w-40 in the primary. It may have been in my head, but the temps dropped more, bike seemed to react better (shifting seemed better). This is what I've stuck to since. Combination seems to be working but would do Mobil again if I had to.
You can get Mobil One at Meijers for $9.49. I buy it at AutoZone all the time for $7.99 on sale. I'm in Ohio too.
We don't have a Meijers locally, and I was told at our local Autozone the price had gone up. But so did the Amsoil price which is available at our local parts store. Last year Amsoil was just under $10/qt and Mobil 1 was a few cents cheaper. This year its the opposite except both prices increased. And we haven't had any sale prices on any oil in a long, long time. If I couldn't get Amsoil in town I would still be using Mobil 1.
I also found that same parts store has Wix filters to fit my TC88 for about half of what the dealer wants for their filters.
Mobil 1 20/50 oil at Walmart for $9.99 here and the Amsoil for $12.47 at the local Atwoods. I used to be a preferred customer with Amsoil and used all their products for years and even got into some arguments over this, but not anymore. Look into your J&P cycles about Amsoil motor oil, it will say call for pricing. They were then and still are not constantly bumping their prices and I finally got tired of it and went somewhere else. Yeah Amsoil is good stuff, but the Mobil 1 is just as good and one hell of a lot easier to get.

Mobil 1 is the same price at my local walmart. The local Autozone and Oreillys have Mobil 1 for $11/qt. I haven't really looked for scamsoil because I think all their products are overpriced and overrated. The only place I've seen scamsoil locally it was $15/qt, no thanks.
My dad has an 09 ultra that he used scamsoil in from the beginning and had a tick the whole time using it. Every dealer told him the noise was normal and at 78,000 miles had to have the engine rebuilt from a bearing going out, luckily he has an extended warranty. I've heard of other people having experiences like that from using scamsoil. Those experiences and the price is why I won't ever use scamsoil. I've never heard of anyone having issues like that with Mobil 1.
