Bradstreet's Landing: Site of what's known as "Bradstreet's Disaster" on Oct. 18, 1764. More than 1,600 British troops, commanded by Col. John Bradstreet, landed at what is now a lakefront city park known as Bradstreet's Landing. The expedition was devastated, losing many of its boats and supplies ,when the lake surged onto the shore. Soldiers had to make their way back to Fort Niagara by foot, or in the remaining boats, under grueling conditions.
After the hostilities of the War of 1812 ended in northern Ohio, Militia Captains Jabez Burrell and John Day from Sheffield, Massachusetts, settled in this area in 1815 and encouraged friends to join them, and began to clear land for their farms.
