I was wondering if anybody had done this before, I want to paint my chrome speedo housing gloss black on my Fat Bob. I also want to paint the heat shields on my exhaust, but I've never painted over chrome before, and I was wondering if anybody makes a product for this application. Thanks for the help!
use a sand blaster to just etch the finish and than sand with 320 grit to smooth out surface finish. so the self etching primer has a surface to bite into. use a good quality self etching primer, dupi-color has a rattle can for this application the color is like a pea green. than use your black color to top coat. you can use a flat black and top coat with a good quality clearcoat will match your factory black which is on your forks and risers.
just changed my chrome handles to black with be putting back on bags tonight.

All the black on my bike was painted by me - minus the handlebars......it was all chrome before! I just sanded the heck out of it by hand until the chrome was gone and it looked like a dull aluminum. clean with alcohol - prime and paint. A lot of mine I didn't even prime and used Rustoleum bed liner - looks great and is on for good!
Be sure to use the clear adhesion promoter (primer) and give it a full week to cure.
i know a guy that has painted over alot of chrome and recommends sanding the chrome and using self etching primer first if not over time the paint will peal.
I needed to paint some plastic parts and found a spray for plastic that is like a etching paint. You spray paint it or prime while it is still tacky and let dry. You can use any paint. I usually use rustoleum appliance epoxy.
I needed to paint some chrome so I gave it a try. Well it suck good, I could not scratch the paint off. It had to be sanded off.
Done it 2 years ago still looks like it did when I first did it.
If you want I will post a name for you. Got to go to the shop first. LOL
