Default '09 Bob Fender Cut

Ok, it’s time to do this. I’ll be honest – I’ve got almost no clue what I’m doing and I’m not super thrilled that my first metal cutting experience is going to be my fender, but I’ve read a few forum threads and web articles and the consensus seems to be it’s not that big of a deal.

What is holding me up now that I’m looking at it is the line that seems to be dictated by the turn signal/underside of the strut and top of where the taillight was is going to be a funky looking line. Not even straight across, but more slanted toward the front of the bike to accommodate that taillight.

I’ve seen where one person looks like they sort of went with it and cut inward in a design to accommodate it. I don’t see me doing that. Any suggestions or words of encouragement from those who have done it that it comes out ok and doesn’t look stupid?

Frankly, at this point – I’m just about ready to cut it and live with it for now anyway. Maybe find another option later. I hate to be turning my scooter into some kind of rat bike if you know what I mean.

Well, it’s a Bobber now for sure! Going to have to live with it for a while anyway until I can figure out something else to do with it. I’m not crazy about how it looks, but it will have to do for now. There just wasn’t a lot that I could think of to do with it to make it a better looking line.

I bought a Dremel and some of the cutting discs and it cut through it surprisingly well. Now that it’s down from the jack I can see that it isn’t perfectly even and could stand to be shaped up a bit more. The little Dremel is pretty handy for cleaning up the cut. It’s still a pretty sharp edge though and less than ideal.

Use the piece of fender that you cut off to shape the rear of the fender.......plop it down right on top with a towel underneath and trace the rear lines with a yellow marking crayon available from any hardware store....or your kids crayons......then cut the shape....it will be even and contoured, just like the original fender....that's what I did at least....worked of me....but I also cut my fender struts off to the first mounting bolt....

That was the reason that I posted originally. In order to cut from behind the extensions behind the struts and cut around where the old third taillight was mounted meant that it almost as to be cut angled inward toward the top = a really ugly line. I did my best to try to cut it short (resulting in one side that still needs to be trimmed back a touch to be perfectly even).

If you’re cutting the struts then you’ve got all the room in the world to make a pretty curved line however you want it. I’m not cutting my struts though. I use my struts for the detachable solo rack for trips.

Thanks though.

Take a piece of string/twine/yarn whatever....pull if from the front of the turn signal, underneath, then up over the fender, then back underneath and forward of the turn signal.

You can work with it together that smooth line you're after, then use a sharpie or whatever to marl out your line.

I prefer to do it over masking tape.....

Hmmm you could go for a Rocket Bobs rear fender, which are a lot cheaper than Heartlands stuff.
