Good morning from Ontario Canada. I just got a new '07 Bob & noticed an odd "clank" when I take off.Don't know if it has anything to do with it, but this is a 103" Bob with head work (all SE parts). Anyhow, I only hear it when I blip the throttle....before I let clutch out to get going. Sounds kinda like a metal plate hit by a small hammer. Not real loud, but enough to hear it over the engine. Rode to the dealer yesterday& the mech said at first it was "intake noise". Not possible. I know a clank when I hear one. Then he heardit....not as loud as I've heard it....but enough to be heard. He said it could be "pushrods" that need adjusting.(He said motors with ported & polished heads have pushrods....but others don't?). I may bea techno-dork, but it sure doesn't sound like a pushrod noiseto me. Otherwise the bike runs great. I've noticed the cluth is adjusted to engage only about a quarter inch off the grip though. I have to squeeze it right to the metal to keep from creeping ahead at lights. Any ideas out there? Dealer said they'd adjust the thing at first service....but that's quite a ways off....I only got a couple hundred miles on it so far.
IMHO................... Sounds like a little slack in the primary chain.
DougJ (not Bob)
I will second that, but with a Hydrolic tensioner this should not be the case...I would take it to the dealer and tell them to fix that noise NOW. Don't let them be lazy and bullshit you into ruining your bike.
Make those lazyaholes adjust your clutch & primary chain & check the belt alignment and tension right away.I amsaying this assuming you gave them all the money for your bike up front and not at the 1000 mile service. Also, make certain the primary has enough oil in it. The level should hit the bottom of the chain when the cover is off. If it's pushrods clanging you have a bigger issue.
Oh yeah...welcome to the forum.......and ANY noise that can be heard OVER the noise from a Harley Davidson Vtwin engine is a problem.
From John D. in Canada....with the "clanking Bob". Thanks guys. That settles it. Back to the dealershe goes for a checkup. I talked to a mech at a dealer in Port Huron Michigan today aboutmy "clank"and he says more or less the same thing. Primary chain is likely the culprit....probably because the tensioner isn't stopping it from slapping. No point doing a 100+ HP motor if it's going tobreak something that shouldn't get broke. By the way...it's incredible to have experienced Harley guys from every corner of the world to ask questions. Even ten years ago this wasbarely possible. Thanks again. Looking forward to breaking my Bob in & talking HOGS on the forum. Turned my '06 883 in for this beast& haven't regretted it for a second.
It might have adustable push rods also, they might have some slack in one.
Another thing is I have let the clutch out kinda fast on my Bob and you can make it ping hard at very low RPM'S it could be something like that also. Make sure and always run super in it.
primary tensioner taking up the slack - nothing to worry about, I think. I was warned by my dealer to expect it, but I don't get it. Mine is smooth as silk, no noise. Well, as smooth as HD get.
