I was on the highway to hell yesterday with my 2006 Wideglide. It was about 90 degrees out and I was stuck in a 30 mile traffic jam rarely going over 10 mph for 1:30 minutes. At one point my check engine light started flashing pretty quickly and steady. The bike didn't run any different. Luckily... as soon as it started flashing the traffic eased up and I was able to ride at about 60mph. As soon as I started moving at 60 the light turned off and it was all good after that. I happened to also have my low fuel light on too at the time because I didn't intend on spending 1:30 minutes roasting on the highway.
Is this an overheating warning light? I couldn't find anything about it online.
It means a fault has been detected. You will need to check what code was thrown, it could be related to the engine temp but you will have to pull up the code.
With an air cooled bike sometimes we have to pull over and let it cool for 15 minutes, and sometimes we take a chance and grab the shoulder and keep a big eye out for the law! An oil cooler is a good idea in warmer states even fan assited if you can.
The amount of time stuck in traffic and the outside temp will do that, especially with a stock tune as HD likes to run the engines lien to get them thru emissions - if you get a good tuner, you can richen up the mixture - more fuel means more HP, less fuel milage and a cooler engine.
He needs to check out Jason`s Wards Head Cooling fans first.
I have a Wards Parts Werks FCS fans. I got caught in bumper to bumper sight seeing in Cade's Cove this week. They never let the engine get over 239 degrees.
I have a cooling fan, and an oil cooler. Just for when I am runs that travel at 20 miles an hour or less. My cooling fan just broke and I over heated the engine on the run. Had to drop out and ride to the location with my friend. Cooling fan is so important to protect the heads and pistons from damage when the bike overheats.
