IT'S ALIVE!!
WAHOO!
As some of you know, I bought my brother's '80 FXEF that had been garaged for the last 15 years. I was having some coil problems and basically just tinkering and trying to figure out the issues with the coil.
Tonight I went to tinkering again. Got the service manual, voltmeter, screwdrivers, wrenches, my lawn chair and a Diet Coke and went after it. Check the voltages per the manual, all OK. Looked for grounds or bad connections. Took things off. Put things on. Took them off again. Put them on again. Swatted mosquitos. Turned the engine over a couple of times. Cough, spit, sputter, die. Drained the battery. Jumped the battery.
Everything seemed to check out. Went in to eat and let the battery charge. Came back out to find the bike sitting in a pool of gas. I had left the petcock open. [:@]
Unplugged the charger. Cleaned up the mess. Cranked over the engine...
And it started...AND RAN....and ran faster, and faster, and even into the red. I quickly shut it down. Maybe the thing just needed some gas.
OK back to the manual...idle adjustment...page 4-25...fast idle, 1980 non-adjustable something...tinker...start...still too fast...shut down...hum, there's got to be a way to slow this thing down.
Upon closer inspection, poking, prodding, and twisting I found the "real" idle adjustment screw. Never saw it in the manual....start the bike...twist the screw...800 rpms per the manual...still needs more timing...but a easy spin around the block is in order...
Wow what a great first ride...put maybe a whole quarter of a mile on it...hiccuping every so often...but it was great.
Back to the garage and park it for the night. I'll get the timing right tomorrow. Tonight I'll just be happy I got it running.
