After a few times, it does get easier. I found that punching hole in bottom of filter gets most of the oil out. Then I stuff some absorbent rags underneath.
I punch a small hole at the bottom and top of the filter, let it drain onto a piece of thin plastic into a drain pan pan. When it's done, spin the filter off. No mess.

Do this while on the jiffy stand for best drainage.
Cut the bottom off of a one liter soda bottle then take out about a four inch u-shaped portion of one side of it then slide that up on and under the filter. No mess.

Mountain Dew is my empty bottle of choice. As long as you get more oil in the bike, than on the garage floor, it's a successful oil change.
HD's oil filter location definitely was designed by monkey's in a $h@t flinging contest. Once you accept the fact oil's going to go somewhere...it's not all that bad. I have a roll of tin foil in my garage and use it to form funnels and layer over the parts under my filter. Catches most of the crap and then a few squirts of degreaser & she's good.
Form-a-Funnel from New Pig corp. You can form it to any shape, and it's impervious to oil, fuel, etc. Works like a champ under the oil filter to direct any spills away from the bike. When you're done you just wipe if off and roll it up. Whomever designed this thing is a genius.
Yeah, the only part I hate about the oil change on my bike is taking off the damn oil filter. No matter how I do it, I always get some oil drips that I end up having to soak up with Q-tips or shop towels.
