I believe the inner just needs a hole drilled for the shaft?
I may be wrong, but I really don't think that will work. You need the inner because that "hole" you are referring to is actually a tube that supports that entire shaft. It mates up in the middle and has a rubber or gasket-type seal to prevent fluid from leaking out. That is why it is ok to cut that shaft and remove it when going from mids to forwards. I installed forwards, but just left the shaft in there and pushed it back so the end is flush with the outer case.
If you drill a hole in the inner, it will leak fluid unless you somehow seal around the mid-shifter shaft and hole you that you drill.
