Default what did I do wrong??

OK so I have a 76 ironhead sportster that was not getting any spark. so I took off the starter solenoid to check the wires. And when I hooked I'd back up when I hook the battery back up it starts to turn over by itself what did I hook up wrong?

Sounds like you have 12v power hot all the time at the ignition post of the solenoid. You should have 3 posts. The smaller one is the ignition post. One of the larger posts gets 12v power from the battery and is hot all the time. The other large post is for the wire that goes to the starter. It is energised when the ign post is activated. You should only get power there when the key is on ign and the start button is pushed. You probably just got your wires mixed up.

You said it wasn`t getting any spark, so you took the starter solenoid apart?

I`m a little confused here...

Do you mean the starter wouldn`t crank, or do you actually mean the spark plugs aren`t sparking.
