Default Fuel gauge or tank float problem?

I (over)filled my tank so that gas came out the vent hose when I left it on the jiffy stand. Since then the fuel gauge display's range goes from full (pinned) to around half tank (when tank is actually empty). My question is what steps would you do to diagnose whether it is the gauge or the float (hung up?) that is the problem? Thanks in advance.

Since the gauge is working just not accurate the problem is in the float adjustment, you can pull it out and bend the arm to adjust.

The float/gauge is affected by fuel level, vapor, pressure and vacuum. When you overfill a tank the fuel cannot flow through the fuel system efficiently. As fuel leaves the tank the void needs to be filled with air to prevent a vacuum. Air gets sucked in through the vent. Also, as fuel sits it gives of vapor. That vapor will increase the pressure in the tank if it is not vented properly. A clogged vent (Debris or fuel) can make a fuel float/gauge act inconsistent.

First, take of your fuel cap off to release any excess pressure or to fill a vacuum void with air. Next make sure your vent hose is clean and clear. Then let your tank run as near to empty as you can. Fill the tank up again and see if the gauge gets more accurate. You may have to do this a few times to get the gauge to re-calibrate. Also remember that the fuel gauge is somewhat idiot proof. They are designed so when the gauge reads empty there is still 1/2+ gallon of fuel left in the tank.
