Default Question on trailer lighting LED?

Hi, New here today. Figured this is the best place to get an answer to my question on the topic of LED lighting. Just put a trailer hitch on my 1996 1200 and am now trying to figure out the wiring for the lights. My research shows the proper way is to use kuryakyn 7671 harness with 5-4 part 7675. My question is...if I change the bulbs on the trailer to LED....could I just straight wire the trailer? All the research I have done tells me a trailer will draw too much amperage and fry my bikes wiring. Anyone have any advice?

(I did post this in another thread but was advised to start a new thread....sorry if I broke the rules on the first day)

Don`t buy any electrical parts yet, because the type of module / harness you need depends on the lighting configuration of the trailer (I`m assuming you don`t have a trailer yet, correct me if I`m wrong).

Yes, I have a trailer, it's a Coleman caboose. Has the flat 4 prong.

No, you can`t straight wire the bike to the trailer, because they have different circuits:

The trailer circuit combines the brake light and turn signal circuit for each side. There are four wires on the trailer harness:

Left turn/brake
Right turn/brake
Running lamp
Ground

The bike does not combine the circuits for turn and brake:

Left turn
Right turn
Brake
Running
Ground

This is why you will need a trailer light module, it will take the signals from the bikes turn signal circuits and brake lamp circuits and combine them so that the lighting will work properly on the trailer.

You need a 5 wire to 4 wire module.

Use an isolation type module that is powered by a fused wire from the battery. This way the trailer lights are not drawing power from the lighting circuits. Another advantage to a isolation type module is that if there is a failure in the trailer light circuit, it will not affect the motorcycle circuit.

Thanks for the answer. That is what I figured would be the case.

Default Update

Ordered Curt Upgrade circuit protected tail light with converter hardware #56146KIT from etrailer.com. Included in the kit was the circuit tail light with converter #56146 and wiring kit for powered tail light converter #55151. Also included was a light tester. Total with shipping $53.92. installed on my bike today. All lights on the trailer working well. I would recommend not buying the kit if you already have a tester and I only used the inline fuse out of the wiring kit. (56146 alone is only 24.95 plus 4.99 shipping )
