Default Turn signal self cancel problem

I have a 93 flhs that I've done a road king conversion on, but I didn't convert to an electronic Speedo, instead I mounted fxr/xlh gauges above the nacelle. Now my question is I've looked up both part numbers for the self cancel module and they are the same for a 93 sporty and the flhs, I know the flhs used a reed switch to cancel. I'm trying to find out how the sporty cancelled their turn signals with the cable drive Speedo and no reed switch. Any help would be appreciated

I can't speak for a '93 Sporty, but I've owned my 1990 FLHS from new. These bikes, including yours, had a single electronic module to provide all of the flasher features, including self-cancelling, which you should find strapped to the r/h fork leg, between the trees. There is a white/green wire from it to the back of the stock speedo, which provided the module with info on distance travelled (and was a darned nuisance!).

So if you started from a near-stock bike which had working indicators and flashers (all four lights flashing together) and it also cancelled the indicators, then you should still have the stock flasher module. Simply refit it somewhere convenient and reconnect that white/green wire.

Well I sorta figured it out, apparently I have an older Speedo that I retro fitted. I found that the 93 sporster Speedo made for self canceling had the reed switch built in, my doesn't. My green and white wire and reed switch are not hooked up because I was under the assumption that it had to be hooked to the Speedo, not just dangling under the nacelle. I assumed that if I just left the reed switch attached but not to the Speedo that it wouldn't work. Am I wrong in this thinking?

My understanding of the module our FLHSs have is that they have two self-cancelling features, one based on time, the other based on distance. Certainly mine will switch off if stationary for a while, say at a traffic light, but it would also switch off after a while when riding, say approaching a junction (I disabled that). Both features were a pain in the backside, because I could find myself not signalling when I wanted to and had to keep checking the warning light and, if necessary, switch them back on.

I have no idea if our stock FLHS speedos have a reed switch in them. I suggest you connect your white/green wire to see if the self-cancelling works!

They do have a reed switch. It sits right on top of the Speedo if you were to lift the cluster up. I thought that as well that it had both and that if I left the reed switch unplugged that the time function would still work. I can't say for sure that it worked to begin with because I tore the bike down before I had a chance to ride it. I guess I'll see if I can hook up the reed switch and leave it under the nacelle and see if it works. It's not the first thing on this bike that I've had to redesign or rewire

Yeahi figured it out but ended up selling the bike before I ever got them functional again. But I did figure out exactly how they work, so if I run across it again I'll be prepared
