I recently purchased front and rear LED inserts for my bullet signals. The fronts went in without issue but the rears are giving me fits. I had switched out the old flat signals on my 06 FLHT for the street glide style bullets a while back. Now it seems as if the LED inserts won't sit far enough back into the housings for the lenses to pop in. They are HD lenses. It looks like if I sanded a total of 1/16" or so off the inside of the lens tabs the inserts would fit inside of them, but I don't think that's how it's supposed to go. I think the ends of the lens tabs are supposed to apply slight pressure to the ring around the LED insert. I'm considering trying to pry the reflector/socket out of the housing to see if they can be separated. Ideas?
I know that the inserts are a close fit, close to zero tolerance....so it can be one of those things that require everything to be in alignment "just right" for the inserts, lenses, and housing to play nice together. Things to check: Is the existing lamp base sitting squarely and as far as possible inside the housing? Watch to make sure all alignment tabs are mated correctly. Yes , the lens tabs do keep pressure on the lamp base. As long as the existing lamp base is square to the housing as far in as possible the LED inserts should pop in. TherE are some alignment tabs in the bottom of housing that must be lined up "just so". As a last resort, if you have to sand the tabs as you mentioned, no big loss if that does not work, plastic lenses are cheap Maybe also talk to customer service at Custom Dynamics for ideas. I love that company, they also answer the phone and try to help you.
I had somewhat the same issue with mine when I put them in, they need to be positioned just right for them to fit. It took a bit of playing around to get them in right, but once in they stay very well. Make sure the reflectors are fully inserted in the bullet housings.
I really like the inserts but I modified the operation so that the DRL and brake turn off when the turn signal is operating. Now the operation matches the fronts where the white ring goes off when the turn signal is operating.
