starting issue
Hi all, I'm new over here , I've been reading some of your post looking for answers regarding my concern , I've got a 2005 dyna super glide , now it is 45k miles with a problem to start up , some of your post made me think that is probably a stator issue and battery , however I'd like to ask you , on your experience , if you think that is now a good time to have stator , battery , rectifier replacement after all this amount of miles ???? is this a typical issue for a HD motorcycle after all this time ?? thank you in advance !!
Battery yes- regulator maybe... stator maybe..... if you can describe your issue better- people here love to try and help. Is it not charging? Is that why its not starting? Charged battery ready to go is a must for troubleshooting.
If it ain't broke don't fix it. If you are just having starting issues then get your battery load tested to see if the battery is the culprit, check all connections as they should be periodically inspected anyhow. If your batt is good then perform starting and charging system tests. Don't borrow problems that you don't have yet.
If it's the original battery it's probably time for a new one. Either way, charge it up fully and have it load tested. Check your ground cable connection at the starter, it can get loose and dirty. Take it apart and clean it well.
Your stator and voltage regulator should also be tested once the battery issue is resolved. They don't necessarily go bad due to age. Don't buy any parts until you have them diagnosed. And feel free to ask any questions as you go along in the process.
Does it have a carb or is it fuel injected? Could also be a fuel problem.

A regulator and stator can last a lifetime of riding or malfunction tomorrow.
45K Miles is not a lot of miles.
Do not change items unless there is a confirmed diagnosis of failure.
A battery failure would be a common failure and battery can by tested by removing battery and conducting a test at an auto shop.
Make sure that brass looking spacers are used at battery posts when re-installing.
Many people use an aftermarket battery and fail to use the included spacers.
Failure to use the spacers causes battery cables to NOT sit flush against terminals causing charging problems and starting problems.
It can also cause a terminal to melt.

I am curious about the battery spacer. Running stock batteries but never noticed anything brass or spacers.
