Did diode test again on the voltage regulator. I get readings of about 1.94-1.95 on all 3 prongs and nothing when testing the way it should read nothing. I have no frigging idea if 1.94-1.95 is the right readings. The other new regulator I have tests about the same numbers. I'm not sure what is considered a big gap when the numbers are 1.94. Is 1.89 a big gap for instance?
Also, I tried testing voltage coming out of the regulator with the bike running and the battery and ground plug unplugged. I set meter to dc voltage at 20 setting, put one lead to a known good bike ground and the other to the positive side of regulator and it fluctuated between about 1 and 3. I don't even know if you can test that way or if I did something wrong. But if that is a way to test for voltage coming out of regulator then it sounds bad. If this regulator is bad then something is blowing regulators either instantly or not too long after hooking it up to bike.
Any thoughts at this point? Any helpful info is greatly appreciated.
My 60th birthday is Thursday and I was really looking forward to riding as many hours as I could stand that day and any day I get the time until I can no longer physically do it.
Any idea how to tell if my multimeter is any good? Third new regulator right out of box shows close to same readings. The Ideal 61-360 multimeter I have I think is about 20 years old and has hardly ever been used but I can't believe 3 new regulators would be bad. Either the meter is wrong or I am.

For what it's worth this sounds like good diagnostic thinking to me. If the meter is that old, and three new regulators test bad then it's very reasonable to suspect the meter. They are cheap and very available. [joke about someone's sister goes here].
Hole up, 3 regulators? I think I skipped a few pages in this thread.
gleam, so I went and bought a cheapo Innova 3320 multimeter and with it set to diode setting I get no reading on the voltage regulators but with the Ideal 61-360 I've had for a long time, I get 1.94-1.95 readings. Seems like both meters are wrong or regulators are bad and I wasted $42 on Innova meter.
Sure, it's only money. In the mean time, I'll wait to see if I get any useful helpful information through any of my hdforums posts. If I think of a new question, I'll post a new thread. That's what the forums are for.
I can't help with the regulator but I know that's a good brand of multimeter, and I believe that's even the actual model I've seen recommended as a good one to get.
