Default 04 Road Glide intermittent headlight issue

04 Glide headlight doesn’t come on. Gauges and
running lights come on, only headlight doesn’t work.
neither high or low beam. Here is what I have figured so far. I have 12 v at the fuse . Relay is working. I get 12 volts all the way to the gray connector on the bike side of the connector that goes to the left side of the handlebar/ switches only when I disconnect the handle bar side of the connector. When I plug the handle bar side of connector in the voltage goes away. I have continuity through the blue wire from the fuse box all the way to the handle bar hi / lo switch . With the handlebar wiring plugged in I get continuity through the blue wire. But no voltage in blue wire when ignition turned on . The headlight has come on a few times when ignition turned on and hi and lo beams both worked. Wiggle test at connections and hi lo switch did not produce any
conclusions. Pins in connector checked and are not the issue. I’m thinking intermittently bad hi lo switch ???

Read the voltage at the headlight connector, while it is connected to the bulb.

Unplug the headlight connector from the bulb, and read the voltage again (if the bike has two headlight bulbs, unplug both bulbs).

What are your voltage readings?

I hadn’t taken the outer fairing off to this point. I was hoping to avoid that but when I have time will do that and let you know what I find. Thanks for the reply
and suggestion.

Well this is strange. No voltage at bulb connector’s
when Plugged in or not plugged in. But I was able to put voltage from a separate source to the bulbs and get them to come on. I ohmed out the hi lo switch on both settings
and it is good. Here is what is strange. There is a connector in the fairing area from the main harness that goes to headlights . The double headlights have a harness that joins into 1 and connects to that main harness connector and splits off to each headlight. I have
12.2 volts to that connector at the main harness ( both hi and lo beam setting) When I plug in the
Connector that plugs into it that splits to the 2 headlights I get no voltage to either headlight at the connector at the bulb. I have confirmed continuity through all of the wires from the split connector to the connector at each bulb so I don’t know why the voltage isn’t continuing to the connectors at the bulbs. I seem to be loosing the voltage at the connection at the main harness where it connects and the splits off to each headlight. But from where I get voltage at that connector down to the bulbs I get continuity so that is puzzling.

Forget about reading continuity, it will just **** you off.

Always read voltage, and do it while the circuit is under load.

Take your voltage readings starting at the connector and work your way back, you will find where the open in the circuit is.

And look at the wiring diagram to see exactly how the circuit is laid out, the connector at the headlight is not wired to the main harness, it is connected the control switch on the left hand controls.

thanks for your reply. Much appreciated. I have a change in findings. I checked voltage again at the connector right at each headlight and I do get 12.2
volts at the connectors while unplugged from the headlights. When I plug either headlight in the voltage goes to 0.

That is a classic symptom of excessive resistance somewhere upstream.

Just work your way back toward the fuse, check at each connector while the circuit is under load, you`ll find it.

Since it is both high and low beam, my suspicion is the switch, or a connector upstream of the switch...
