Default voltage regulator

I have a 2011 Road King. I started it and after about 30 seconds off letting it warm up smoke was pouring out from under the voltage regulator. I checked and I found a large burned spot in the underside of the regulator. The wires and the connectors are fine. I'm curious to get info as to what happened. I don't want to replace the regulator and fry the new one. If anyone can enlighten me as to why the regulator burned up I would greatly appreciate your input. Thanks

Internal short most likely. If the alternator was putting out over voltage the wiring would show signs of over heating and burning. Since you say the wires and plug appear ok that indicates the problem is in the rectifier.

More info needed. I replaced rectifier. When I turn on ignition switch I have nothing at all. Is there a fuse or relay I need to check? I replaced rectifier with a genuine Harley rectifier. Thanks

You have a 50 amp master fuse under the left side panel. Check that as well as all the fuses and fuse block for corrosion or over heating.
