I recently added 14" apes to my 09 Ultra. I wired them myself and have had no issues for about 6 months. Recently I have noticed the start button doesn't always work on the first press. Seems to be worse when cold and almost nonexistent once the bike is warm. My first thought is a wiring short in the work I did but I am also wondering if the switch itself is the problem. Is there a way to check the switch itself? I don't mind pulling the handlebar wires and redoing them but obviously don't want to if that's not the problem.
Somewhere in the circuit you have an open circuit, or excessive resistance.
Check the easy stuff first: Load test battery, clean all battery cable contact surfaces, clean contacts at starter relay, and the contacts in the small connector on the starter solenoid.
Check the connector for the harness to the right-hand switches, make sure the contacts are in good condition and not pushed out of the connector housing, clean the contacts with contact cleaner.
Unplug the connector on the ignition switch and clean the contacts.
