Default De-pinning technique?

I'm trying to remove a damaged wire from this connector on my '99 1200. I bought the depinning tools, but not sure I'm doing this correctly. I've watched a few videos but they're not very clear on technique for these connectors.
I know the tool should release the pin-lock, but nothing seems to be releasing and I don't want to bugger it up. Does the tool actually push the connector out, or just release the lock and you pull the wire out?

Any advice on technique is much appreciated!

Look in from the other side and you should see the latches. I remove the pins with a pocket screwdriver. I'm sure there's a correct tool but I don't have one.

Mike the tool will release the lock enabling you to pull the wire out ... Good Luck

You release the lock/ catch on the pin with the tool and manually pull the wire/ pin out the back.

To emphasize what downzero said above, be sure you've released the latch on the other side of the connector. (the side opposite the pins where the wires go into the connector) There's usually some kind of hinged door that has to be opened or a plug that has to be removed to allow the pin to come out after you've released the tab on the pin side.

These ones are one of the easiest to depin on Harleys. No need any special tool but small screwdriver, pick or awl
As i see you've already opened the back latches all you need is pry the tang out of the pin and pull the pin back by the wire.

I hope you can see from the manual, you are prying the plastic tang that is holding the pin in place.

A lot of times those terminal tools will just hit the end of the release and not ramp it down. I typically lube the tool to help avoid the "blunt lock". Also helpful to push the wire in to take pressure off the mechanism while inserting the tool, then pull. The above images are really great to help you visualize what needs to happen.

Well thanks again guys for all the help and diagrams/photos! I finally removed the wire. Turns out one of my pick tools worked great and the ones I bought, that didn't work, are going back to Bezos.

Now to replace the broken wire and connector. Are these the Molex connectors I'm seeing for sale? Anything special to know about these?
