Just snagged a brand new compression tester. Heading home to see what happens. The previous one was my dad's 20+ year old gauge from his diesel mechanic days.

With the introduction of larger valves, and work involved, the OE chamber volume usually becomes larger.
Tough to get the squeeze up on an 88"er w/o a piston sometimes.

Alright well as of right now brand new tester I'm reading 153CCP, WOT, fuel pump fuse out, both plugs out, battery on the tender, I even took the air cleaner off. I'm stumped. Should I warm it up? this engine never used/burnt a lick of oil.

Were the heads vacuum tested for 100% seal (no leakage past valve seats when valves are closed) by whoever did the porting/valve job?

Also could be improper sealing of the rings during break in. Here are some interesting links on proper break in:

The jugs have never been removed. The rings are seated by Harley that are in it. As for the valves sealing I'm 100% positive they are. I didn't ask the guy but I know his work and it's top notch. Best of the best.

Being off one tooth on the outer gear would explain the issue.. Brings the intake close to 36 degrees.. Smaller motor with good low lift flow numbers will read less.

I think I'm going to chock it up as low ccp because the rings have 35k on them. I think I definitely will be boring my jugs. Just talked to my machinist. He says 98" on stock jugs I will run into overheating And he's seen a few blow the spigot out. He says 95" with forged pistons, wrist pins, rings, clips base gasket(o-ring) and mls head gasket $610. Scott I know you offer the 98" what's your take on this? Also what is your price on the above package?

Yeah I triple checked the timing. It's gear on gear so awfully simple to get the dots lined up.

I know it's hard to get off but have seen it done.. Is it possible you got 585s instead of 583s? Maybe the cams are mismarked? About the only other thing would be shaving the key on the cam gear during outer gear install..
