Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Put Vance & Hines shortshots (header pipes & mufflers) and a Screamin' Eagle Heavy Breather Performance Air Cleaner on my XL1200T. Then I had the bike dyno tuned and the ECM flashed at an H-D dealership.
Pre dyno/flash, The rev limiter was 5,800 RPM and now it's ~6,800 RPM.
Not complaining but I am wondering why the bike's rev limiter is set ~1,000 RPM higher.
(I realize that this is a n00b question so with apologies...)
Depending on the mods you do (maybe not with what you have now but if you do more actual engine work later) the extra revs maybe needed.
With cams and headwork your peak horsepower could be greater than where the factory limiter is set
No need for 6800 limit, at that point your maxing out. 6500 on an aggressive street build is all you need. If you miss a gear and float a valve it could be detrimental.
I always thought it sounded so stupid when guys (usually alcohol influenced) push them to the end and then keep it there, like they're just tryin' to blow money!

According to the dyno chart, the peak horsepower after the stage 1 is at the same RPM as stock, around 5,600. With the stage 1, HP falls slightly from 5,800 to 6,500 and then it drops rapidly to 6,800.
I was wondering if the stage 1 safely allows the engine to rev higher.
I don't think there is a stage 2, 3 or 4 kit from H-D for the 1200 sporty. Be interested to know what else I can do w/ aftermarket parts. Right now I'm at 72.77 hp around 5,600 RPM and 75.92 lb-ft around 4,300 RPM. Assume the dyno is measuring at the rear wheel and not the crank.
