There have been several DIY options to lock rocker shafts; roll pins, set screws, .30 cal casings, etc. The Rocker Lockers will work if the valve train noise is the result of the shaft rotating. Only issue I see is that they will make shaft removal a bit more difficult; the bushings will have to be removed or the shafts tapped or pressed out. I think it is a worthwhile improvement. Not sure if it will work or is required for aftermarket billet support plates like the Vulcan or Woods support plates.
Haven't really seen any negative comments about the mod.If the rocker shafts are not being held in place by the support plate retaining bolts, they are going to make noise. The mod is the least expensive way to stop this clearance problem unless you want to put in aftermarket billet support plates to the tune of 300 to 400 dollars for the plates.I just cannot reason why Moco hasn't addressed the valve clatter problem.Wonder if the newer Rushmore engines have the same clearance in the support plates? Moco designed this clearance into the support plate for a reason,if not and its a design fault, they need to rectify it,but thats dreaming.
Rocker Lockers look like a quick easy fix for the chatter at mid range rpm's ... Shimming has always helped rocker shafts. I used shims in the Shovelhead shafts to quell some nasty chatter.
Just picked them to see if it will address the clatter, sure sounds the same as the video and like its coming from the rocker boxes. I've adjusted pushrods 2x after initial setting was set per recommendations here. I don't think its the PRs or lash and no signs of PRs hitting tubes. Will be installing later this fall so will have to wait to see.
Just installed mine today on a 2013 103 cu in with 9,000 plus miles on it. I pulled my tank as per service manual which gave me more access to bolts. All in, the job was only about 2 hrs and Lockers went in easily.Could only detect one rocker plate bolt with a wear mark from the rocker shaft. After installation,I started motor and it is quieter than before in the mid RPM range. This upgrade seems worthwhile for the 15.00 for the kit and 11.00 plus for the new rocker cover gaskets.Still don't understand why the factory has the clearance between the rocker shaft and the rocker plate bolt.Maybe it is not worth while to them to address the valve clatter.I guess it can't harm anything since the shaft and bolt are both case hardened steel.
I have a similar product on the market, please see my website in the link below for details.
