Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I recently had gear driven S&S 510 cams installed in an 01 FLHRCI.
I know that the tech didn't check the run out but said that he checked and the crank was true and that there wouldn't be a problem.
After the work was done engine was running ok but then the oil light started coming on, tech felt that the cam support plate was warped ( found out later that this could have happened if he used heat on it to install bearings)
He found a used support plate and put it back together but now have constant vibration which doesn't smooth out at higher speeds, feels like i'm riding a vibrator.
What happens when you pull the bearings from one plate and install in another,
could this be the problem?
Also after motor is fully warmed up I'm getting a lot of what I think is valve or rocker noise.
Any ideas?
Sorry that the tech that did the work gave such POOR advice said it would give me a little more acceleration off the line. Not sure what you mean by tuned off at?

I run a 2001 FLHTCI with an S&S 510 gear driven cam. Normally this cam isn't recommended for an early touring bike for a couple of reasons. For one thing, it builds power in the wrong area for a heavy bike. Most touring bikes want more torque down low, where the S&S 510 is made for power up high. The cam doesn't really kick in until you get over 3,000 RPM's. It also needs a little more compression than stock to really come alive, I believe that 9.7:1 is where it wants to be. That being said, if you're the kind of rider that likes to accelerate hard and not shift until you see at least 5,000 rpm, this can be a fun cam. But you may need a lot more mods to get there.
If you are hearing rocker noise only when the engine heats up, you might not have enough preload. Have you tech re-adjust your pushrods, or learn to adjust them yourself. It's not a difficult job.
And for the vibration, you might check the front motor mount.
