Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
So here is my conclusion from the last three posts (please jump in and correct me if I am wrong):
As Dan 89 said, if I were to SWITCH from crankcase breathing to head breathing I would need a late model cam cover/pinion shaft, etc. But in my case of adding head breathing while also utilizing the stock crankcase breathing, I can leave my cam chest setup alone. (Yes?)
From PWMorris's S&S post: The new SSW+ engines have a special head breather setup that requires the front head and rear to be vented differently, but my understanding is that the heads on my S&S stroker EVO would be vented just like a normal evo (into a T and to the atmosphere through a small
filter on the end AND have the umbrella valves installed in the rockers). (Yes?)
If the two above conclusions are correct, I am going to proceed with my plan of adding head breathing during the rebuild/inspection.
Also, I started tearing into the motor last night and noticed the intake valves looked pretty gummed up. I will attach some pictures to see what you guys think and if they would indicate another problem with the current setup.
I'm looking at leaking covers now on my '84 FXR Evo, can the covers be removed with the engine still in the bike? A couple of bolts on the rear cylinder are right under the frame?

Yes,
It's tight up there on the rear rocker box but I have ground down an Allen wrench so it slides in there and grabs those bolts. You can also put a jack under the engine for support, and loosen the front engine mount which will rotate and lower the engine forward for easy access. On an 84, you might also find that front mount rubber is pretty beat up and in need of replacement.
I continued on the tear down and inspection last night. All gaskets appeared intact down to the base gasket. My piston tops did appear pretty sooted up and I am wondering (before I start putting it back together) if they, along with the previously posted 'gummy' intake valves are indicating something is not quite right? Any insight?

Jordan started this thread to find help for his engine problem, it is rude to hijack someone else`s thread, and it makes it difficult to follow who is talking to who...

Agree-
Guys do this all the time-"oh I see someone's talking about something a bit similar to my problem, let me ask my questions here...".
I haven't yet decided if they don't know any better, or if they know exactly what they are doing and don't give a ****.
Either way, as you said, if someone has an issue with their bike, start your own thread.
Jordan,
Have your heads every been freshened up with new valves, guides, springs etc.?
Looks like possible leaking guides, and Pistons look they are exposing your possible oil control problem.
Is head work in your budget, and did the Pistons clean up nice?
