I know this is an old thread, but anyone have conflicting specs? I ask because I was just performing this at 20 ft lbs and snapped one of the bolts. Real nice way to ruin your day, and future days to come.
Maybe your torque wrench is off or the last guy who tightened it was a gorilla? If they are new heads you might want to make sure the bolt isn't bottoming from a shallow hole.

One last thought - if you were using a torque adapter (dog bone), they have to be used a certain way or the torque will be off. On the shallow hole possibility, I would think that a healthy bolt could have handled 18 lb/ft though.
I was using a large wrench, which tell sme QC may have called it. I have an Inch pound but it only goes to 200 in. I believe 22 Foot pounds would be 240 inch pounds. Not sure how much difference 40 in pounds can actually make?
