Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
My wife's 02 Fatboy din't wanna start after gassing up, kinda like dead battery. I tried it and it started but wasn't quite right so we headed for home about 5 miles at about 30 mph in 3rd gear real easy. About 1 mile down road motor started to shoot the blues and oil out air cleaner so she stopped. We get the bike home in a trailer and I start looking.
Oil fouled plugs
Very low oil level
Smoking both cylinders
No real engine noise
She hasn't ridden this bike in about 1 month as she has another and this bike never did this before even after winter storage
So I change plugs and add oil.
I place some hose on the head breathers and into a graduated pitcher I use for fluids.
Bike starts right up and sounds good
Oil is coming out breather hoses and filling up pitcher to the tune of about 2 qts and still smoking outta both cyl but not real bad.
I shut her down for the night
Any ideas as I've never had a twin cam sump before. Any other issues to look for?.
Bike does have the upgraded cam plate and oil pump assy, I did it last yr and bike has about 5k on it since then. Stock 88" with 203 cams and open ac and SE slip ons.
Sumping happens on some bikes.
If you checked and added the oil before you started out because you saw it was low, you started out with too much oil as the oil that was originally in the tank ended up in the crankcase, and you added oil to it, so when the 3 quarts that was in the crankcase filled the tank, the oil you added only had one place to go. Usually this ends up with the dipstick blowing out and oil sprayed all over you and the bike.
Sometimes the oil pump will lose the "seal" and this will cause sumping.
After pumping the oil out when you got home, how much is showing on the dipstick now?
Only added the oil after I got home and the smoking, sumping already happened. Bike sat and cooled for about 2 hours when I connected the hoses, checked and added oil, and started it again
Usually, the oil tank will refill before what you described happens. Check the oil return line for a blockage.
From what I've seen in here, the next thing after that is to check the oil pump.
Maybe someone else will jump in to help.
Assuming that this occurred after some riding.. The scavenge pump like ate something it didn't like.. You'll need to pull the cam cover / plate and inspect the pump..
Well, took the motor apart and found the problem. That is a 1 yr old 5000 miles SE oil pump and plate. All bolts, O - rings etc were tight and good. Crank is also scored where pump goes.
