Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I've been noticing what appears to be increased engine vibration after a day of riding. No performance loss. Also appears to be more noticeable cam chain "whirring" (could just be paranoia)😬 Tensioner shoes are good.
Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.
The bike is an 05 FXDI.
Try to pin down when the vibration appears. All the time, in a certain gear or speed or rpm range? Does it go away if you pull in the clutch?
First thing I would check are the engine mounts. Then go over every fastener you can get a wrench or socket on, including the exhaust system.
Welcome to the forum!
hope you do not mind me jumping in here. having same problem.
feel the vibration in the foot boards. vibration comes and goes.
teands to start vibrating in 3rd or 4th gear. vibration sometimes lasts for a minute, sometime just a few seconds.
vibration does not go away when clutch pulled in.
vibration started off not vibrating for long, now when it bike vibrates it can be for a longer period of time. there are still times where bike will not vibrate very long. primary/cam is good. mounts seem to be good also.
can forks or break rotors cause vibration?
Thanks for the reply and the add on I'll check everything suggested. Mine seems to be after extended riding so I didn't know if it's heat related. I don't think, in my case, it's fork or suspension related.
Couple of extra notes: plugs were ashy white and it seems that when I start to notice the vibration that the exhaust note becomes more "tinny", not as deep and throaty. I'm wondering if I'm running too lean. Also I've noticed sporadic backfiring which seems odd for fuel injection.
So an update, rode 100 miles today, no backfiring or popping, nice gurgle when decelerating like normal. All I can say is it just seems to run rough. At 60 mph it's like it's at a reduced rpm. I can still accelerate fine although it doesn't appear that she kicks in with the same oomph. I know this isn't very specific....just rough running.
Any sensors that might cause that?
Thanks Scott. Today I pulled the filter element and cleaned it. I noticed quite a bit of oil in the intake/throttle body. I think my filter was too dirty and the motor might have been pulling air and oil into the throttle body making it run rough and robbing a little performance.
Make sense to anybody? I don't have an external crank breather.
