Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Unless the lower unit on your 96" motor has grenaded, you don't t need a 103" motor to replace it. Bore your cylinders, install a set of SE cast pistons, have your heads worked, install a cam set, get her tuned and call it good........
I believe the EFI will be the same.. If it don't come with a throttle body, you can use the one off the 96..
If you got the Tmax figured out on the 96, going to 103 will be a cakewalk.. One minor issue might occur if the 103 has a throttle body with larger injectors.. Thunderheart can take take care of that for you or anyone with the advanced user licence.
It would cost about the same to upgrade my engine so I get an upgrade with less miles (mine has 50,000). I will sell my 96" when done so even less out of my pocket. I will find out more about the motor today.
I did the swap used my old throttle body and injectors, no problem, I had to because my 07 is cable throttle, the 2015 103HO I put in was TBW. Works awesome....I would do it again. The fuel is controlled by your ecm or Fuel mngmt , in my case, I just got a map for my Power Commander 5 for a 2015 103HO bike and voila.

My poor 08 Ultra has 125K miles on her so I have been thinking of doing the motor swap to a 103 to get a refreshed bottom end and revived top end. I have the Dobeck fuel managent system on mine but the damn thing just runs so good I will have to wait till she dies. I'm in no hurry....but good to know that a newer 103 will bolt up to my tranny and primary.
I am doing same thing now. Got a question. What do I do with the ACR stuff on newer 103 heads? Dont have acr on 07 96in.
A few options actually. I have a 2010 96" RKC and I'm going with a FM 107 eventually, I recently bought a set of 103 ACR heads as I'll need compression releases and don't want manual buttons.
I'm sure you could wire the ACRs into your '07. I don't think your bike has ACR capability in the main harness like my 2010, but you could still wire them to the starter circuit, others here have done that. I assume you could also use 96" heads with MCRs, but that's not as elegant a solution as wiring in ACRs.

I know, I know this is a wicked old thread, but my question applies specifically to this issue so bare with me. When you did the swap how did you approach the differences in the motor mounts? I am swapping a 103 motor and trans from a 2014 into a 2006 Street Glide frame. The TCA motor is rubber mount. The frame for the 06 is not. Anything else that I will run into that you can think of off the top of your head? Appreciate your time.
